FIRST PERUVIAN LADY TO ARRIVE AT THE ALPAMAYO SUMMIT

JOSEFINA JAIMES MAGUIÑA.
Born in the Cotaparaco district of the province of Recuay – Ancash.
The Santiago Antunez de Mayolo Mountaineering Club – CASAM, in June 1986 organized the first Peruvian expedition to Nevado Alpamayo, made up of:
Josefina JAIMES MAGUIÑA, Ego MAGUIÑA, Javier VINO, Augusto ORTEGA PACHECO, the brothers Pedro and Max BERNUY, Javier BARRETO ALBERTO AND Porfirio CACHA MACEDO.

The project was to climb the central canal or normal route (misnamed the Italian route), with a group of people determined to succeed with great humility. We arrived at the moraine field with great enthusiasm despite carrying backpacks with more than 25 kilos each. Unfortunately in the moraine field we had several days of bad weather buried with snow day and night, shaking the tents every moment so as not to be buried, food diminished and the weather was not fixed; Given this circumstance and for the success of the expedition, the group by majority decision had to return half the expedition with pain in our souls (the last 4), in this way saving food for those who remained. It was the best decision. After these mishaps, the expedition managed to reach the much desired summit of the snowy Alpamayo (5947 m.) Josefina Jaimes, Augusto Ortega Pacheco, Ego Maguiña and Javier Vino.
