Huaraz has different cultural festivities throughout the year where tourists from all over the world and inhabitants of the city visit and enjoy with great excitement each of the dates in the different months of the year.

January

  • Festival of the Negritos of the Child Jesus (January 1) This festival is celebrated in Huaraz and other towns in the Callejón de Huaylas. The participants, dressed in typical costumes, walk through the streets dancing and singing in honor of the Child Jesus.

  • San Sebastian Festival (January 20) This festival is celebrated in Huaraz to commemorate the anniversary of the city's declaration as the capital of Ancash. There is live music, dancing, typical foods, crafts and other activities.

  • Feast of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá (January 20) This festival is celebrated in Caraz, San Sebastián and Recuay. The Virgin of Chiquinquirá is an image of the Virgin Mary that is venerated in Colombia and other countries. In this festival, there are masses, processions and cultural events.

February

  • Huaracino Carnival (February) This carnival is celebrated in Huaraz and other towns in the Callejón de Huaylas. There are Comparsas, a parade of floats, the entrance of the Ño-Carnavalón and mowers or yunzas in all the neighborhoods of the city of Huaraz.

March April:

  • Holy Week Huaracina Holy Week in Huaraz is carried out with a variety of religious activities with processions, the decoration of litters, preparation of carpets, visits to the city's temples and many more activities.

May

  • Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Lord of May This is the busiest festival in Huaraz. The procession of the Lord of May, with the image of the Lord of Soledad, brings together thousands of people from all over Peru. Traditional festival that is celebrated every year in tribute to the Patron Lord of Solitude, accompanied by contests, dance festivals, novenas and processions which begins from May 2 to 10.

  • Lord of Solitude (May 3-11) This festival is celebrated in Huaraz. The image of the Lord of Solitude is venerated in a sanctuary that was rebuilt after the 1970 earthquake. The procession of the image brings together thousands of devotees.

June

  • Saint John the Baptist (June 24) This festival is celebrated in Huaraz and other towns in the Callejón de Huaylas. The blessing of water is performed and Saint John the Baptist is venerated for being a protector of crops and livestock.

  • adventure festival It takes place every year from June 25 to July 1, developing adventure sports activities, such as cycling, rock climbing, kayaking and conferences.

July

  • Tourist week of the Callejón de Huaylas This festival is celebrated in Huaraz and has the participation of tourism companies, artisans and local producers. There are craft exhibitions, typical foods, mountain tours, trekking, lagoons and climbing.

  • Anniversary of the Creation of the Province of Huaraz The month where the Province of Huaraz celebrates its anniversary every year for its political creation. An event where social, cultural activities and fairs are held, which begins on July 20, the central day is July 25 and extends until the 30th of that same month.

August

  • Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption of Chacas (August 13-22) This festival is celebrated in Chacas, a town on the eastern slope of the Cordillera Blanca. There is a procession, typical dances, bullfighting without death, exhibitions of agricultural products, crafts and flowers. The ribbon race on horseback, the mozo dance and the huanquilla step are also performed. The burning of fireworks takes place for five days.

  • Señor de Santa, Yungay (August 20-22) This festival is celebrated in Yungay, a town that was destroyed by the 1970 earthquake. The image of the Lord of Santa is venerated in the new town of Yungay. There is a procession, dancing and music.

December

  • Christmas Christmas is celebrated in all the towns of the Callejón de Huaylas. The streets are decorated and there is a party atmosphere, music and fun.
